Biography:

Pieter graduated from Ghent University as a Master in Civil Engineering in 2006 and obtained his PhD Degree from the same university in 2011. His PhD research focused on the mechanical behaviour of self-compacting concrete, including bond, shear and compressive behaviour.

From 2011 till 2013, he worked part-time for industry focussing on the design and application of external reinforcement (FRP and steel) for buildings, part-time as leading member of the concrete inspection and assessment group of the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research (Ghent - Belgium) providing services to industry.  

In May 2013 he joined the Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies (CIES) of the Missouri University of Sciences and Technology (Rolla, MO – United States of America), where he assisted in the development of the new Engineering Research Laboratory and performed research into RCC (Roller-Compacted Concrete).

He has been a member of the organizing committee of the 5th International RILEM conference on SCC (2007, Ghent - Belgium) and the 6th International RILEM conference on SCC (2010, Montreal - Canada). Besides that he was member of the scientific committee of several international conferences and symposia.

Currently Pieter holds a position as Senior Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, UK. His research at the University of Cambridge is funded by the Engineering Physical Sciences & Research Council and focuses on the assessment of existing half-joint structures (with an emphasis on bridge details).

  • Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) including the mechanical properties such as bond, shear and compressive behaviour
  • Behaviour of half-joint elements
  • Concrete inspections and assessments, including NDT techniques
  • Remaining bearing capacity of reinforced concrete structures. 
  • Remaining life time predictions of RC structures.

Other Professional Activities

Pieter is an active member of RILEM (International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures), was a leading member of RILEM TC 228-MPS - Mechanical properties of SCC and member of IABSE (International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering) and the American Concrete Institute.

He is also the current Chair of the Engineering Department Postdoc Committee (edpc.eng.cam.ac.uk) and Vice-Chair of the Departmental Postdoc Committee Chair Network (www.pdoc.cam.ac.uk/dpccn).
