Dr Marco Dona

Marco Donà is a Research Associate in the Glass & Façade Technology (gFT) Research Group. Marco joined the gFT Group in June 2015 with several diverse experiences both as researcher and chartered engineer. After completing a master degree in Structural Engineering at the University of Padova, he worked for three years as structural engineer in different engineering companies in Italy where he was designing a large variety of complex structures including tensile structures and roller coaster. He then moved to the UK where he obtained a PhD in Structural Engineering at Loughborough University on “Static and dynamic analysis of multi-cracked beams with local and non-local elasticity”, and worked as research associate on experimental validation of non-local theories for wave propagation in heterogeneous material.

Dr Marco current research focuses on the connection of a new generation of fibre reinforced polymer sandwich panel system and their design methods suitable for geometrically complex building envelopes. This  project is funded by Innovate UKEPSRC and the industrial partner Newtecnic and supervised by Dr. M. Overend.

Research Interests

  • Composite materials for facade applications (e.g. GRC, FRP)
  • Mechanical connections for building components (steel-steel, concrete-steel, GRC-steel, FRP-steel)
  • Panel manufacturing processes
  • NDT techniques including wave propagation
  • Non-local elasticity models
