Principal Teaching Laboratory Technician

We are looking to appoint a skilled technician who will be based in the Mechanics, Materials and Design Division at the Department of Engineering's site in Central Cambridge. The Division provides a large amount of undergraduate teaching in the areas of mechanics and materials. The teaching courses are supported by laboratory exercises performed by the undergraduate students, and these exercises are frequently revised and updated. The equipment in the teaching laboratories includes, but is not limited to; microscopy, mechanical testing equipment and facilities for heat treatment and NDT analysis.

Reporting to the Materials Laboratory Manager, you will provide highly technical support to ensure the smooth running of the materials teaching laboratories. This includes providing advice to staff and students on using existing experimental techniques or developing new ones, supporting teaching activities and maintaining the equipment in the laboratories. There may be a requirement to manage a small budget for the purchase of equipment and specimens to support experimental activity.

The successful applicant will have a practical experience of specialised laboratory activity and equipment and knowledge in a materials engineering related subject. You should also possess good communication and IT skills with working specialist knowledge of relevant regulations and good practice. The ability to work to a high degree of precision and accuracy in the manufacture of mechanical parts is desirable. Experience of providing training to groups and individuals is also required.

Research Associate in Silicon Carbide in Power Electronics (Fixed Term)

A position exists, for one full time Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on developing new devices and carrying out extensive TCAD analysis for Silicon Carbide for high voltage (over 600V) and high power applications commencing September 2025. The successful candidates will have a PhD in the relevant field and preference will be given to candidates who have expertise on Wide bandgap power devices, experience with Power Semiconductor TCAD simulations and ECAD design, Comsol or Ansys. Also other semiconductor simulators such as Synopsis (Dessis) or Medici and with layout design such as Cadence.

Applicants are required to submit a publications list so must have a good publication record, with two or more international journals and two or more international conference papers. Good communication skills are required to write up research work for presentations publications and to continually update their knowledge and understanding in the field of power devices with special emphasis on Wide bandgap materials and technologies.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, UK.

Salary Ranges: Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263

Programme Manager

Applications are invited for a Programme Manager to take overall responsibility for the administration of the grants and associated human, physical and digital resources of the Construction Information Technology (CIT) Group led by Professor Ioannis Brilakis. The Programme Manager is supported by, and line manages, a Programme Coordinator as well as a Project Manager for the EPSRC Digital Roads Prosperity Partnership and its resources and a Senior Project Manager for the MSCA FUTUREROADS Fellowships COFUND and its resources.

The CIT Group currently leads or is involved in £65M of major and minor grants, including but not limited to leading the two above that together comprise the Digital Roads of the Future initiative. Others include EU grants CBIM, BIM2TWIN, OMICRON, AEGIR, BUILDSPACE, D-HYDROFLEX, several i-CASE PhD studentships, etc. Together, they employ over 70 staff and students. The Programme Manager is also expected to liaise and coordinate with the admins staff in the Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology, the Future Infrastructure and the Built Environment Centres for Doctoral Training, and the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction.

Based at the Department's Civil Engineering Building in West Cambridge, and reporting to the Director of the CIT Group, you will manage the administration of the above to plan and ensure the delivery of their day-to-day financial, IT, commercial, operational, and logistical elements as well as ensuring that all statutory reporting requirements are met. Additionally, you will be responsible for managing the relationships with partners and funding bodies, including applications, reporting, communications and change control to enable effective oversight by grant governance structures. This will involve engaging and influencing senior decision-makers across business and academia, to understand needs and priorities, to know what equates to excellence, and to lead the programme team to deliver this. You will therefore need to be comfortable creating solutions to new challenges and be effective at fostering a culture of creativity and innovation.

By leading the administrative decision-making and working together with industry partners, other Centres and groups, you will provide a range of specialist services to support research and training activities the Division and will also cover for the CIT Director as appropriate.

You will hold a PhD degree in engineering, science or relevant discipline and post graduate experience, education and training in project management would also be desirable. The successful candidate will have previous administrative or project management experience, preferably in a research-related role and in a university environment. You will possess excellent interpersonal, networking and communications skills, including high-level relationship management skills, combined with the necessary budget and programme management skills. Experience and knowledge of the construction industry and of working at the industry/academic interface would be advantageous.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2027 in the first instance.

Research Assistant/Associate in Semiconductor Devices (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a postdoctoral Research Assistant/Associate to work on the development of novel semiconductor optoelectronic and sensing devices using high-throughput fabrication and characterisation techniques. The role holder will join the Low-Dimensional Electronics Group under the supervision of Dr Jack Alexander-Webber.

The successful individual will have experience working with emerging materials such as semiconductor nanowires, graphene, or two-dimensional semiconductors. They will have experience with designing, fabricating and characterising arrays of devices such as integrated circuits or sensor arrays. Experience generating, processing and analysing large material property datasets including correlating between multiple techniques, or developing computational reconstruction techniques for sensing applications, would also be beneficial.

The successful candidate will be engaged in:

  • Developing semiconductor-based optoelectronics, sensors and related functional devices, using arrays of nanomaterials.
  • Demonstrating novel device functionalities, generating and analysing multi-technique datasets.
  • Designing, building and optimising characterisation systems. This could include a combination of brightfield/darkfield optical microscopy and spectroscopy, optical lithography/patterning, hyperspectral imaging, photocurrent measurements, and sensor characterisation with suitable readout electronics. Programming hardware control and user interfaces for data capture, and automation to enable these techniques.
  • Writing and publishing journal papers on experimental findings.
  • Playing an active role in the day-to-day supervision of students involved in the project.
  • Working cooperatively within a team of academics, researchers and postgraduate students at Cambridge, and collaborating with industrial partners and other UK-based and international universities.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

  • Must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry or Nanotechnology.
  • Track record of authoring high quality academic publications in field of semiconductors/materials characterisation, and integrated circuit/sensor development.
  • Experience and skills designing, building and optimising optical, optoelectronic, material characterisation, lithography, microscopy, sensor characterisation systems.
  • Experience and skills in computer programming for hardware control, data acquisition, and automation, computational reconstruction, data correlation.
  • Interpersonal and leadership skills as required for interdisciplinary collaborative research project.
  • Motivation and enthusiasm for curiosity-driven research.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: *Research Assistant: £29,605 - £33,966 *Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263

IfM Functions and Catering Supervisor (Fixed Term)

IfM Functions and Catering Supervisor

The Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) is situated in West Cambridge and has large meeting, seminar and lecture room facilities. The IfM hosts regular internal and external meetings and events and the catering and hospitality function is an important and central feature of the Institute. The Functions and Catering Supervisor oversees and delivers the catering and hospitality service at the IfM ensuring that a quality service is provided in accordance with Environmental Health guidance and in adherence to financial targets.

This is a hands-on role, and you will manage the day-to-day running of the operation to provide a catering and hospitality service in the IfM Servery and common room as well as providing catering for the many meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences hosted by the IfM for colleagues and external visitors. You will be a member of the wider front of house team and, as such, will provide cover for members of the reception team if required and assist with general admin tasks.

You will be educated to at least GSCE standard and hold a Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety and Hygiene (Catering). You must be familiar with working in a catering environment and have the ability to work accurately with figures and manage a budget. Good interpersonal and customer service skills are essential for this role as well as experience of handling card payments. Previous experience of staff management is also required as you will have line management responsibilities for a catering assistant. It may be necessary on occasion to work outside core hours to accommodate early morning or evening activities and events.

Research Associate in Bioeletronic Device Translation (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Associate to lead the translation of bioelectronic devices for neurological applications. Candidates should have a PhD in electrical engineering and relevant translational experience. The project is highly collaborative, hence evidence of the ability to work with stakeholders in medical device translation within the NHS is critical.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are working and interfacing with project partners to define performance metrics and validation criteria, reviewing relevant literature, designing devices and connectivity, device validation using agreed criteria and planning the use of research resources and your own research activity, in collaboration with others.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are a PhD in Engineering, knowledge and experience in experimental techniques in fabrication and validation of bioelectronic devices and connection of bioelectronic devices with external electric and fluidic components. The role holder should also be experienced in collaboration and communication outside their own discipline and institution and in collaborating with clinicians, nurses and patients within the NHS. Experience in the ethics approval process for use of novel bioelectronic devices in clinical trials within the NHS is also required.

Unestablished Teaching Assistant (Part Time, Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a number of Teaching Assistant posts from recent graduates or others suitably qualified in any major branch of engineering with good communication and interpersonal skills, and enthusiasm to be involved in face-to-face teaching. The posts provide valuable experience and preparation for a career in higher education.

The successful candidates will contribute mainly to the development and delivery of the Department's undergraduate programme in experimental engineering. The bulk of their time will be devoted to demonstrating and marking undergraduate laboratory exercises, but they may also be expected to help to develop new teaching material, update associated documents. Candidates will be expected to also assist with the quality control of examination marking.

The successful candidates will be appointed for 5, 10 or 20 hours per week and must normally be available from 9 am to 1 pm on weekdays during the University's teaching terms.

Fixed-term: Appointments will be fixed-term, commencing 8th October 2025 until 7th July 2026, and are non-renewable.

Current PhD students should give their PhD Supervisor as their first referee.
